Aquamarine - March Birthstone of the Month

Aquamarine comes from the Latin word meaning “Sea Water.” Medieval sages prescribed water touched by Aquamarine for a host of ills, including those affecting the eyes and lungs. Brazil is a major source for Aquamarine.

Since early times, aquamarine has been believed to endow the wearer with foresight, courage, and happiness. It is said to increase intelligence and make one youthful. As a healing stone, it is said to be effective as a treatment for anxiety and in the Middle Ages it was thought that aquamarine would reduce the effect of poisons.

Here at Gems N’ Loans we take our gems seriously and Aquamarine is no exception! Throughout the month of March we are offering 50% off the Birthstone of the Month, some exclusions may apply. Come in today and take a look at our selection.

What is The Pawnshop?

In the most simplistic terms, a Pawn Shop is a business that engages in collateral-based lending. Given this, it also sells items that have been left by borrowers and most Pawn Shops buy items outright for sale. The practice of collateral-based lending has been around since ancient times, but became a popular enterprise in Italy in the Middle Ages. In the beginning, pawning was practiced as an act of charity by the Franciscan Monks who lent money on tangible goods without charging interest. It has been reported that this enterprise was picked up on by the famous Italian banking family, the Medici's who then turned it into a for-profit business.

Pawn Shops have grown by leaps and bounds in the United States - especially in the last 5 years. We are very familiar with the famous Pawn Shop in Las Vegas depicted in the hit reality television show Pawn Stars. A Pawn Shop in Georgia is credited with the beginning one of the first online pawn shops and a Pawn Shop in Los Angeles recently helped police nab a burglary suspect by following the trail of stolen goods. And, if you're looking for a Pawn Shop in Florida you don't need to look far as the latest consensus shows Dade County Florida having more pawn shops than any other country due to the flailing economy. Pawn Shops are a fixture of the American business landscape and will surely continue to grow be so for centuries to come.

Pearls - June Stone of the Month

The stone of the month for June is the Pearl, it is also the traditional birthstone. Gems N' Loans has a large selection of Pearls at any of our four locations. Pearls come in a range of natural colors and shades including white, pink, lilac, cream, grey, black and gold. The traditional color associated with the Pearl is the milky white color, which was strongly favored as a popular gem in Victorian jewelry.

Pearls are found inside the shell of a mollusk such as an oyster or clam. Natural Pearls are either saltwater found in gulfs, seas and oceans or freshwater pearls found in rivers and lakes. Cultured pearls are produced when man has introduced an irritant into the mollusk - these are called imitation pearls.

Pearls come from all over the world like the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Mannar, the South Pacific, the Gulf of California, the Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific coast of Mexico, Europe, Japan and Australia. A good sized pearl can take between five to eight years to form, which is usually the entire life of the oyster or mollusk. The cost depends on the size and the coating, or “nacre”, on a real pearl which gives it its iridescence.

The Symbolism of Aquamarine

Spring is just around the bend and what better way to begin our welcome than with a gorgeous stone!  This month's stone of the month is the beautiful Aquamarine.    Before we jump in with how to select a great piece of jewelry, how about a little background first?

Every stone has histories and symbolism attached to it from many cultures and here are a few that we find interesting:

Aquamarine is a stone of courage. It accelerates the intellectual reasoning process and makes one unconquerable through learning - not only of knowledge passed through teachers of the past and present, but of oneself.

Aquamarine blue is a divine and eternal color, since it is, after all, the color of the skies. Aquamarine is also the color of water, with its life-giving properties. This stone is attuned to the ocean and helps us to get in touch with the nature spirits of the sea. Take some time, close your eyes, breathe deep and remember sitting on the beach at dusk, the water coming in, the cool breeze. This is Aquamarine's gift to you. (Read the full article here)

According to legend, it has its origin in the treasure chest of the mermaids, and has for ages been reputed to be a lucky stone for sailors. It is a very good stone to take on vacations and cruises.
In terms of its metaphysical and healing attributes, aquamarine jewelry is thought to attract compassion, trust, friendship and harmonic situations. It is also a love attracting stone and it is said that the woman who wears it is promised a happy marriage with a wealthy man. For this reason an aquamarine ring or pendant might be a good gift for a young woman who is just setting out to find her fortunes in the world. (Enjoy the full article here.)

So it sounds like this is a piece of jewelry frequently worn by ladies!  What a great graduation, birthday or anniversary gift!

How would you know if you are getting a good stone?  We've rounded up a few tips for you!

1) Select a shade that you like. Aquamarines come in shades from the lightest sky blue that is almost clear to a very deep, clear aquatic blue. Most aquamarines are free or nearly free of interior inclusions, but if you want a light shade then it is more important to select a stone that does not have any large flaws on the inside as they will muddy the brilliance. Conversely, flaws in a darker stone can actually make the stone brighter and more interesting to look at.

2) Consider the cut of the gem. While aquamarine can be flattering in a variety of traditional cuts, its hardness and nearly inclusion-free attributes enable jewel cutters to be more "artistic" with the gem than is generally common. Aquamarines can be custom cut with additional notches and grooves to magnify the brilliance of the gem even further, and sometimes jewelers deliberately create their own surface inclusions on lower levels of the gem to create a more interesting play of light on the stone.

3) Inspect the gem for clarity. While most aquamarines have few to no flaws, it is important to make sure that the top surface of the gem is not scratched or nicked. In darker stones, jewelers may actually create flaws or cut around them to emphasize them as they can emphasize the color and sparkle of the gem. However, light stones should be free of interior and exterior inclusions that will mar the beautiful shine of the stone.  How to Evaluate Aquamarine

All eyes were on the radiant bride as her father escorted her down the aisle. They reached the altar and the waiting groom; the bride kissed her father and placed something in his hand. The guests in the front pews responded with ripples of laughter. Even the priest smiled broadly. As her father gave her away in marriage, the bride gave him back his credit card.

All About June Brides
 June Bride

Historically, many people married in the month of June to honor Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage. Others did it to time conception so child births wouldn't interfere with harvest work. Brides in the 15th century chose to marry in June because it coincided with their "annual bath" -- yes, you read that right -- thus ensuring a relatively sweet-smelling honeymoon.

Today, many young people marry in June because it is the month of graduation from high school or college.

Regardless, people love to refer to the "Lovely June Bride." There are more marriages in June than any other month.
 Juno Statue
In Roman mythology, Juno was an ancient Roman goddess. Queen of the gods, she was Jupiter's daughter. She was also his sister and his wife. She was the protector of women. The month of June is named after her. Juno was the protector and special counselor of the state. Closely associated with soldiers and the military, she often appeared sitting pictured with a peacock, armed and wearing a goatskin cloak.

Through her association with the moon she governed feminine functions such as the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. As the goddess of marriage, she was sometimes called Cinxia (which means "she who loosens the bride's girdle").

The Pearl Is The June Birth Stone -- in spite of the fact that a lot of diamonds are given to brides.

Once In A Blue Moon
Blue Moon

This year the full June Moon will be visible June 2nd - 6th. When a month has two full moons, the second full moon is called a blue moon. It isn't really blue in color. The definition of a Blue Moon is simple: it is a full moon that rises twice in one month. It is said that blue moons happen every 33 months (about every 3 years). There will be no blue moons in 2012. Because of these rare occurrences, the saying "once in a blue moon" is common, meaning "not very often."

Pawn Stars!

The back room of the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop looks exactly as "Pawn Stars" fans might expect, with one very notable exception: one massive wall is lined, floor to ceiling, with boxes and boxes (and boxes) of t-shirts. Since the debut of the hugely popular reality show "Pawn Stars" (Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on History) in 2009, it seems everyone wants to walk around with images of fan favorite Chumlee emblazoned across their chests.
